Arts Integration
Lafayette prides itself as an arts integration school, where elements of visual art, music, and performance come together in every classroom to enhance learning in all subject areas. We recognize that children learn through many different means. Students are encouraged to see the interconnectedness of many disciplines, giving them a deeper understanding of various subjects and making learning more fun. Arts integration provides connected and increasingly challenging opportunities to generate and represent knowledge over time.
Lafayette is proud to partner with the Kennedy Center in its Changing Education Through the Arts (CETA) program. Lafayette teachers attend a program of workshops, followed by artist visits to individual classrooms. Teachers learn arts integration strategies using their own classroom activities as the foundation. Nationally recognized artist educators provide professional development workshops and teacher coaching activities relating arts activities to the standards in reading, language arts and mathematics. Lafayette is proud of this Kennedy Center partnership and works every year to find fresh ways to bring the arts into the classroom.
Arts Integration Vision Statement for Lafayette Elementary School
At Lafayette Elementary School we will embrace the concept of using arts integration as a teaching strategy to engage students in a creative process which connects an art form and another subject area and meets evolving objectives in both. Lafayette is committed to using arts integration to facilitate the development of the social/emotional, academic, kinesthetic and artistic growth of the whole child.
Our school community will continue to learn about and apply arts integration techniques to ensure that our students learn to create, connect and inquire throughout their lives. All teachers will work collaboratively to integrate the arts and academics. Arts specialists will serve as a resource for classroom teachers in order to make deeper connections in multiple curriculum areas and to assist students in developing an appreciation for the arts.
