Sierra Lewter is 1st place winner and Lafayette's nominee
Congratulations to the twelve fourth- and fifth-graders who competed in our intra-school 10 Who Are 10 competition. They were: Zola Canady, Billie Evans, Isaac Frumkin, Joey Horvath, Lionel Kearse, Ben Korn, Maya Lewis, Sierra Lewter, Eli Moraru, Caleb Murphy, Jacob Weitzner and Ava Zechiel. For their efforts, all will receive a $10 gift certificate to Child's Play.
The quality of the projects that the students produced in such a short time was exceptional. But, thanks to judges Kathy Baldwin, Judy Fratto, Meg Freund, Carol Hill, Lisa Jensen, Brad Jewett, Raissa Kushnir, Nancy Nickel, Margaret Quinn and Blake Yedwab who generously gave time and attention to the selection process, once again, we were able to determine our winners in a very close competition. They are:
4th place winner: Zola Canady, 4K
3rd Place Winner: Maya Lewis, 4FM
2nd Place Winner: Caleb Murphy, 4K
1st Place Winner and Lafayette's 10 Who Are 10 Nominee: Sierra Lewter, 4FJ
The first, second, third and fourth place winners will receive $100, $75, $50 and $25 respectively. The theme of this year's competition was Let's Move It Monday! Sierra produced an awesome and informative exercise video and will represent our school in the city-wide 10 Who Are 10 competition for a $2,000 college scholarship. Now her project goes to a panel of national judges who will select ten, ten-year-old finalists from all DCPS elementary schools.
Citing financial reasons, the Marriott corporation withdrew its sponsorship from the annual competition this year, but Chancellor Michelle Rhee stepped in to underwrite the scholarships, thus ensuring that the tradition of offering college scholarships to ten outstanding ten year olds continues - at least for this year.
In a few weeks, we will learn whether or not Sierra is one of the lucky ten. Until then, keep your fingers crossed!
