Student spellers in grades 3-5 have been studying hard for Lafayette’s 37th annual school spelling bee. The bee will begin at 9:10 am on Thursday, Jan. 16 in the Cafetorium. In the event of a snow day or snow delay, the bee will be held on Wednesday, Jan 22 at 9:10 am.
Lafayette’s top three winners will go on to compete in a regional bee, and if successful there, will compete in the city-wide bee held at NBC-4 studios in late March.
Each school district participating in the national spelling bee is sponsored by a local newspaper, and the Washington Informer has been the loyal sponsor of DCPS spellers since 1982 when the first city-wide school spelling bee took place at Backus Junior High School that March.
