A Note From Dr. B

Dear Lafayette Families –

What an incredible weekend we spent together at the Fall Festival!!!!  It was wonderful to see so many families out enjoying the spectacular day organized by our parent volunteers.  Many, many thanks go out to the Fall Festival Committee, led by Heather Schwenk, Ashley McMaster, Taryn Tuss, Marc Van de Walle, Christina Daulton, Rachel Overcash, and Sheri Lockwood.  There were countless others who spent hours of time and organization to make our day so incredible.  Thank you to each and every one of the volunteers, donations, and vendors who came out to make our day so enjoyable as a community!

Our parents are also supporting our school community with their participation in several parent committees and organizations.  Our Local School Advisory Team (LSAT) meets monthly to review our budget, our comprehensive school plan, and to advise on the needs of the school community.  Want to know more? Click here for more information!

This week our After School Advisory Team (ASAT) will meet to hear updates from CLS and FLEX.  Everyone is welcome to join us on Thursday, 10/24 at 6:30 pm.  Please bring your ideas, your feedback, and your questions!

This week there is also a parent meeting hosted by our She Reigns club and our newly formed Empowering Males of Color (EMOC) group.  The She Reigns committee would like to invite the Lafayette community to a parent meeting on Thursday, October 24th at 6pm. This meeting is specifically for Parents of Students of Color and Allies.  The purpose of the meeting is to inform parents of upcoming opportunities for their children, including the She Reigns and Empowering Males of Color Student groups. We’d also like to talk through challenges that our children and families face, and solutions to overcome them.  If you’re interested in attending the meeting, please RSVP.

Field trip season is in full swing! Thank you to everyone who has paid their Class Activity fee.  As a reminder, this is a one-time fee that is collected to help cover the cost of field trip transportation, class t-shirts, end of year parties, and other grade-level events.  If you haven’t yet paid, please do so by 11/1. You can pay here.

Thank you also to everyone who has submitted your volunteer clearance forms. We have over 100 people currently cleared to chaperone field trips.  Keep those letters coming in! You can email them to or bring a copy into the main office. We update our database daily and your teachers need you cleared! We will have our last fingerprinting day here at Lafayette on November 6th from 9 am – 12 pm. The sign up list will be sent out soon.

Our next major community event is our Halloween parade and parties. Halloween is a beloved Lafayette tradition that starts with our annual parade on Thursday, October 31st at 1:15 pm. The parade will start at the front doors of the school, go up into the park, circle the park and then drop down onto the track around the field. Please feel free to spectate around the park or on the outside of the track.  See the map of the parade here. Our Halloween parties will be directly after the parade in classrooms.  We look forward to celebrating this fun tradition with everyone.

I am also pleased to share that we elected our Student Council officers in 4th and 5th grade. Thanks to our Student Council sponsors, Ashley Swartz, Jasmine Rogers, and Ashlee Adams, we held our elections on Tuesday, October 8th. After a tie for president, we had a run off on Thursday, October 10th!  It was a beautiful demonstration of our electoral process. Congratulations to all of our students who were courageous, shared their election speeches, and ran for office. For a complete list of winners, see the results here

And finally, I will leave you with the results of our annual pie tasting contest, held this past Saturday at the Fall Festival. Thank you to all 13 bakers who submitted a pie! Our winner is….….drum roll please ….Paul Brodsky and his apple pie!

Looking forward to seeing everyone in the next couple of weeks,

Dr. B
