The 37th annual bee was a fifth grade sweep! Congratulations to this year’s Lafayette spelling bee champs! Jessie Moss, first place; Lucia Ridgeway, second place, and Luca Nescovic, third place. Jessie and Lucia were Lafayette winners of last year’s bee, and along with Luca, will spell in the regional spelling during the first week of February. (TBA) Keep your fingers crossed for them because all three could win at the regionals where the top 4 to 5 spellers go on to the City-wide Bee in March.
Jesse, Lucia and Luca weren’t the only ones who distinguished themselves at the bee, however. Fourth grader Samina DeVinney took fourth place after a five-round spell off with Luca whose winning word was i-v-o-r-y.
Prior to the spell off, there was a five-way tie for third place with Luca, Samina, and three additional rising spelling stars—Cara Braden, Charlie Denny, and Boaz Movit. All missed in the 7th round. Third graders have been participating in the school bee for several years now just for the experience, but these amazing three were the first to ever to make it this far! Their participation will make for a great spelling bee in 2020!
In all, 40 brave students in grades 3-5 participated in the bee on Friday, January 18. Most spellers had been practicing their word lists since early December. Teachers on the spelling bee committee donated their time to hold daily-scheduled practice sessions for the hardworking spellers. If you missed it you can see the bee live streamed here!
In addition to all our awesome spellers, it was the teachers, administrators, custodial staff, students, judges, parents, and announcer who helped to make the bee such a huge success. Good job everyone!
