From Dr. B.: Extracurricular Fun for the Fall!

Dear Lafayette Families –

It was GREAT to see everyone at Back to School Nights last week!  There were two great evenings of learning about your teachers, your children’s classrooms and all the great extracurricular opportunities here at school.  Below is more information about a variety of upcoming fun extracurricular activities:

Flex Academies

These are outside vendors that are brought in for after school activities usually scheduled one time per week from 3:30 – 4:30 pm.  Registration for Flex ends on 9/14.  The fall session runs from 9/19 – 12/2.

Cross Country

Cross country is here for 4th and 5th grade boys and girls!

  • Practices
Every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:15-4:30

    • Students will self-dismiss from their homeroom lines and meet Ms. Dunleavy in the gym for
attendance (please email your teachers about this change in their dismissal once they are cleared for practice)
-Students should be prepared with running shoes, comfortable clothes, and a water bottle
-Dismissal will be from the gym exit of the school on Northampton at 4:30
  • Required Paperwork

Cross Country Practice Dismissal Form

PRACTICE UNLESS MS. BOSURGI HAS EMAILED YOU TO SAY THAT YOUR ATHLETE HAS BEEN CLEARED. After you submit your paperwork, it may take a week, as it moves through many channels for approval.
  • Last day to submit paperwork on seamless is THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 15th

Any 4th or 5th grade student can sign up to learn the flute, clarinet, trumpet, or trombone.

  • Rehearsal will take place during flex time and end at 3:30 pm, days TBA.
  • Instruments can be purchased or rented for as low as $14.99
  • In the spring, students can switch to alto sax and/or percussion.
  • Join us for an interest meeting on Thursday, 9/15 from 6 pm – 7 pm. There will be a “petting zoo” for the students to try out the instruments!

Choir and Show Choir

Students in 2nd – 5th grade are welcome to participate in choir during Flex time.  Below is an informational flyer for Choir this year! If your student would like to participate in choir during Flex time, please click on your child’s grade and fill out the interest form. I will schedule rehearsal days once I have a better idea of numbers.

**We are also adding a Showchoir this year! This is for any 3rd-5th grade student! There is a link to a video on the                      flyer if you’d like to watch a Showchoir and gage your interest. Students may participate in both if they would like!

Please contact Ms. Gemar with any questions

 Dot Day – 9/15

September also has several fun activities for students and families!  This Thursday, September 15th, Lafayette will join millions of kids around the world to celebrate the power of creativity, courage and collaboration inspired by the message in Peter Reynolds’ book “The Dot” and a teacher who started the celebration in 2009.  Dot Day is a major celebration every year at Lafayette – Don’t forget to send your kiddos to school in all things dots on Thursday, 9/15.

Hispanic Heritage Month – 9/15 – 10/15

Thursday, September 15th also marks the start of National Hispanic Heritage Month. This year’s theme is “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation” by appreciating the community’s history.  We will honor the heritage and contributions of the ancestors of American citizens who came from Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean, and South and Central America.  As a community, we will celebrate with the HSA hosting an outdoor movie night (Encanto!) on Saturday, 9/24 at 7 pm on the field behind school.  Please join us for this family evening.

Here’s to a great Week 3 as students settle into routines, we collect our beginning of the year data, and all of our extra curricular activities start to get rolling!

With love,

Dr. B
