The FoodPrints program is excited to be back at Lafayette for our third year together! FoodPrints is a FRESHFARM program in partnership with DC public schools, which brings together a kitchen classroom, a school garden, and a standards-based curriculum to engage students in learning more about the food they eat in a comprehensive and completely hands-on way.
Kindergarten enjoyed their first session last week. They cooked homemade tomato soup and grilled cheese, harvested okra, beans, cucumbers, peppers, and more from the garden, and explored how seasons affect the local food we eat. Sessions are 1.5-2 hours long and are viewed as an “in-school field trip”, in which each lesson is infused with material students are learning back in their classroom. Each lesson includes a healthy recipe, completely made by the students, and so delicious that even the teachers are lining up for seconds! Many more recipes will be prepared this year, including old favorites like Cauliflower, Potato, Chickpea Curry and Simple Seedy Slaw and new recipes such as Sweet Potato Quesadillas with homemade salsa.
In the 2018-2019 school year FoodPrints served 13 DC public elementary schools. We have over 100 nutritious recipes to choose from and purchase as much as possible from our local farmers markets. We have found that FoodPrints students are more likely to try, eat, and request foods with fresh fruits and vegetables, and understand how to make healthy choices about food and engage in critical thinking about the world around them.
