Meet the HSA Candidates

VOTING for HSA ELECTIONS BEGINS ON JUNE 8!

As a reminder the HSA is our Home School Association, similar to a traditional PTA. We plan events to engage the community and raise funds to bridge the gap between the budget given to us by DCPS and what our school actually spends. We welcome you to learn about the candidates for our elected board positions.

Here are the nominees:

Co-President: 1 position available, serves 2 years:

RACHEL ZURAW

I’m Rachel Zuraw and our family has thrived being part of the Lafayette Community. When we moved to the neighborhood I didn’t realize how much I would come to appreciate the walk to school. It’s my favorite part of each day – to see kid friends and parent friends along the way. I am very much looking forward to the start of the 2021 school year to see many more in-person faces.

Professionally, I have been doing analytics work for 20 years. I’m currently working for Vox Media where I do a lot of work within the DE&I space. Vox cares deeply about equitable access, equal pay, diverse representation in hiring, unbiased management practices and I use data to understand all of these topics.

This is our 6th year with children at Lafayette (Juliana in 4th and Miles in 1st). Over the years I have served as a room parent, I truly love opening doors for the drop off line, and I have volunteered at the Book Fair, Fall Festival, and other events. In 2019, I helped plan the retirement sendoff for Lafayette’s beloved 2nd grade teacher Nancy Nickel and I am a regular volunteer in the classroom.

I am excited for the year ahead and to help reestablish the Lafayette community that we all love and miss. I do my best work with a team and I would be honored to serve on the HSA as Co-President.

Vice President 1: 1 position available, serves 1 year

GABE DICLERICO

I am writing to express interest in running for the First Vice President position with the Lafayette HSA.  My daughter Helen is in first grade at Lafayette and her younger brother James will be starting there in the Fall of 2022.  I am currently serving as the 1st VP of the HSA, having joined in the middle of this school year.  My hope is to have the opportunity to continue in this role the next school year and build upon the work we’ve done to enhance the financial monitoring and reporting of the HSA.

Professionally I am a licensed CPA and am CFO at a nonprofit, ImpactAssets, where I have developed extensive experience with nonprofit financial and tax matters. I’d be excited to bring my time and qualifications to the HSA Board in service to the school community and our families. Thanks for your consideration.

Vice President 2: 1 position available, serves 1 year

ALANNA HART

Hi, I’m Alanna Hart and I am running for 2nd Vice President because I’m passionate about our kids’ education, school, and community. I am a mom of 4: two current Lafayette students (3rd, Maddie, and 1st, Grady), a rising PK, and a future Bear when she is old enough. My husband grew up in the neighborhood and is a Lafayette alum; his childhood memories of attending Lafayette played a key role in our decision to move to this area when we relocated from NYC six years ago.

Since 2016, I have been a volunteer at Lafayette in various roles, including room parent for many years, Girls on the Run coordinator, and Lafayette Girl Scout troop leader. I am eager to volunteer at Lafayette in a new capacity that supports our school’s mission and goals, and elevates our parent community’s priorities and voice.

In my professional life, I consult in the human capital/resources space across commercial and government sectors advising clients on organization transformation, change management, strategic communications, talent strategy, learning and development, employee engagement, culture, well being, and DEI/DIB. Additionally, my day to day entails responding to requests for proposals and managing contracts. I believe the skills and experience from my career, and as a mother of 4, will enable me to serve you and the community in this role.

Most importantly, I look forward to bringing enthusiasm, innovation, transparency, and an open mind to listen and collaborate with the HSA, teachers/staff, and our parent community. I would be honored to serve Lafayette as 2nd VP of the HSA.

Co-Treasurer: 1 position available, serves 2 years

MARK SCHOFIELD

I write to express my interest to serve as co-Treasurer of the Lafayette HSA.

When my wife and I moved to this neighborhood almost 10 years ago, we were immediately impressed with the sense of community that we found. Watching children and families playing and socializing around the school affirmed our decision to start our own family here. Since our daughters, Marie and Audrey, entered Lafayette Elementary School we’ve been more acutely aware of the essential role that parents play to support the school and its efforts. Never has this been more apparent than in the past tumultuous year.

Successful schools bring out the best in a community and our active HSA is a key component of how the community can advance the mission of the school. As a chemistry professor, I also know that successful college students don’t come out of nowhere; they are the result of the seeds planted early and cultivated throughout the K-12 curriculum. In the early days of the pandemic, parents jumped in action with virtual read alouds, online play-dates and learning groups. Hoping to contribute to the Lafayette community, we hosted a weekly “Science Thursday” zoom session last summer with home-based experiments for rising 1st graders.

With our children approaching 2nd grade, I look forward to continuing in these efforts and expanding my role to help the HSA. As a co-Treasurer, I hope to do just that.

PAUL BRODSKY

Throwing my hat in the ring to run for election (well, actually RE-election) as HSA co-treasurer.

As a member of the HSA finance team, I have been intimately involved in crafting and implementing new finance procedures, coordinating with our accountants, reviewing and approving HSA expenditures, etc.

This past year has been very unusual in that so many of the finance-heavy activities (Fall Festival, Spring Auction, Book Fair) did not happen. I’m asking for the opportunity to re-up as co-treasurer so I may relearn and nail down many of the financial procedures that I only touched on two years ago. If the 2021-22 school year is anything close to “normal”, we’ll need at least one person on the finance team with experience with these activities.

I’m happy to bring on anyone who wants to assist with finance so we might groom a replacement when the time comes.

Thank you for your consideration.

Secretary: 1 position available, serves 2 years

ELEANOR CORREA

Hi, I’m Eleanor Correa and I am excited to run for the role of secretary. Since the end of March 2021, I have been filling in as interim secretary thus have had the chance to try it out and gain a good understanding of what the role requires. I look forward to supporting the HSA board in a great capacity next year when we are able to host more of our traditional events.

I have 3 children, all of whom will attend Lafayette next fall in grades 4, 2, and PreK. I have been a room parent, a regular art room volunteer, helped out with Fall Festival, and have coached and managed Lafayette soccer teams. In my professional life, I work as a recruiter, conducting phone interviews while typing furiously throughout, so I’m a pro at taking notes during meetings (a major part of the secretary role!).

I am also a big believer in investing in one’s community and want to give my time and energy to Lafayette which gives my family so much joy, friendship and learning. I love getting to know people and am excited about the opportunity to welcome Lafayette families to our community and help them become more engaged with all that we have going on!
