News and Updates from the Social Emotional Learning Team

We have had a busy past few months! On October 31st, Lafayette celebrated our first ever Mix-It-Up at Lunch Day. Mix-It-Up is a nationally recognized day promoted by the Teaching Tolerance organization. Instead of sitting with their usual class/friends, students “mix it up” in some way to sit with a new group. This year we used birth months to mix it up, and students were able to meet other students born in their same month. The feedback we got from students was very positive, so look out for more mix-it-up events in the future!

On November 15th we held our 2nd annual Career Day. The kids had so much fun at our 2nd annual Career Day! Thanks to all the parents who were able to attend and share all about your interesting career. We learned about various jobs such as physician, lawyer, chef, journalist, cameraman, and even bat conservation! We hope even more parents will be able to join us for next year’s event.

The Mindful Mentors program is up and running! Mindful Mentors is a program for 5th graders who are interested in helping to teach mindfulness to our younger students.  Twice a week at Flex our Mentors go out to 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade classes to lead them in a Mindful Moment. So far the classroom teachers have been really impressed with our Mindful Mentors and the 5th graders absolutely love doing it.  Studies show that children learn more deeply when they know they are going to be teaching what they’ve learned and we’re finding that this is a great way to spread the word about mindfulness and deepen our skills and the benefits we can gain from mindfulness practice.

Our Kaleidoscope Kids groups continue to grow as we learn about all the wonderful ways we are different from each other. While we’ve spent the past few months learning about various physical and invisible disabilities, we are now beginning to learn about all the different holidays we celebrate and the religions, cultures, and traditions they are a part of. If your family celebrates a particular tradition or ritual that you’d like to share, please have your child come to a Kaleidoscope Kids meeting. 5th grades meet on Tuesdays during Flex, and 1st-4th grades meet on Wednesdays at 12:30.

The Banana Splits groups, Girls of Color sessions, and various other grade-level counseling/social skills groups all continue to serve the various needs of our students as well. If you have any concerns about your child’s social-emotional development, or any questions about how to get your child involved in any of these groups, please feel free to contact anyone of the SELT at any time!
