In the end of January, 58 Lafayette students competed in our spelling bee. After a tie-breaker test for second and third place, we had our top three spellers: Henry Scott, Ulysse Harasty and Nelson Harasty. If you missed reading about that, you can find the Tuesday Bulletin article here. After some thought, Ulysse and Nelson decided not to continue with competition, so we had two open slots on our spelling team for the intermediate/cluster bee!
Eliza Bowers-Shreve, as our alternate, was guaranteed one of those slots. However, we had five students tied for fifth place: Milo Montgomery, Emma Lomba, Madeleine Goldberg, Henry Cai and Jonah Ginsberg. Those five students and their families gamely took on a tie-breaker test (the second of our bee!). The scores were very close with Maddie Goldberg coming out on top with 23 correct answers out of 25 words.
Our three spellers — Henry Scott, Eliza Bowers-Shreve and Maddie Goldberg — will sit for the intermediate/cluster bee between February 17th and 19th. This will also be an online test. Spellers from several DCPS schools will compete in the intermediate bee, and the top three spellers from each cluster will advance to the city-wide bee in March.
Thank you again to all of our students for studying so hard! Special thanks to all of you who were asked to take tie-breaker tests. Thanks to the families for helping make this happen!
