Dear Lafayette Families,

This afternoon we completed our lockdown drill.
The drill started with my intercom announcement that we were going to practice “being safe” by practicing going into our lockdown position. All doors and wings were locked and students in the classroom moved away from the line of site in each room. Teachers swept the hallways and bathrooms and ushered any students not already in their classrooms into safe places. Most classes were in lockdown positions for one-to-two minutes. An adult staff member unlocked every classroom and thanked the class for a job well done. At the end of the drill I came back on the intercom thanking them for practicing this extra safety procedure. Within seven minutes we were back to business as usual.

As a general reminder, in the event of a real incident, students would be released from their classrooms by authorized personnel and evacuated to Blessed Sacrament at 3630 Quesada Ave NW, Washington DC, 20015.

If you would like more information about how to talk to your child about being safe at school, or how to talk about violence at school, please reach out to your child’s teacher. The National Association of School Psychologists website is also a helpful resource: https://www.nasponline.org/resources-and-publications/resources/school-safety-and-crisis/talking-to-children-about-violence-tips-for-parents-and-teachers

If you have any questions about today’s drill, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me, any member of the administration or your child’s teacher.
