Stock the Pub!

We’re not going to rabbit on, but this is one bash not to be missed. However, you play it when on the lash—enjoying a pint or sipping whiskey neat or on the rocks—you’ll have a good time helping us Stock the Pub’ at this popular annual soiree.

When: Saturday, March 3rd, at 8:00 PM
Where: The home of Jason & Jennifer Bertsch

The price of admission is simple: each couple or individual attendee must bring one bottle of an after-dinner drink of their choice. The goal is to stockpile bourbon, scotch, whiskey and other digestifs for the LAFAYETTE Harp & Fiddle.

This party is BYOB, so bring your choice of beverage to enjoy while relaxing with good company, snacks and tasty desserts.

Admission is limited to the first 50 people to RSVP by e-mailing Jennifer Bertsch. You dig?

Spectacular Solicitors

Solicitor. The word most often brings to mind a lawyer. Maybe one decked out in robes and donning a white wig. But in this case, we are referring to the deadly group of parents and teachers working their magic (I’m sure its Irish magic…or at least green magic) to secure fabulous donations for our Auction. Every year we hope to make a rake of money for our school, and this year is no exception. Not one quid would make it into our coffers if we didn’t have this team working day and night. We know you’ll join us in thanking them for all their hard work. Dylana Blum, Fruzsina Diruggerio, Anastasia Khoo, Steven King, Alicia Morut, Laura Nelms, Rachael Overcash, and Bethann Siegal, many thanks, and go raibh maith agat (may you have goodness)!

Imagine…you haven’t missed a Lafayette auction in 28 years. Whether your child has been one of her “busy bees” in Yellow Base or not, you should know that Kia Ghamarian is a calm, and always friendly force, within the halls of Lafayette. Not only is she the “bee’s knees” when it comes to teaching, she is also one of the Auction’s biggest supporters. We caught up with her to find out why. She’s fierce, that for sure!

Irish Times: When did you attend your first Lafayette auction?
Ms. Ghamarian: 1990. It was my first year working at Lafayette.

Irish Times: Wow! Have you ever missed an auction?
Ms. Ghamarian: No! Whether it was a casual BBQ or at different locations like the Russian Embassy, Fannie Mae, Wilson H.S., or at our own Lafayette I have never missed an auction. (almost 30 years;)

Irish Times: That’s impressive! Twenty-eight auctions in a row—I can’t imagine. What are some of the most memorable auctions you’ve attended?
Ms. Ghamarian: There have been so many. I think my favorites have been the year of the 1960's theme and also last year’s theme the roaring 20's. It was such a fun theme and great to see almost everyone dressed up. The antique car was so cool to have in front of school for taking pictures. Everyone had a great time. For me personally, the most memorable auction was the year my teacher's treat was moved to the live auction.

Irish Times: Why do you think it is important to support this annual event?
Ms. Ghamarian: Because it is such a great fundraiser for school and its students. The extra support funded by the auction/HSA is what makes Lafayette so special and unique in so many different ways. It also allows teachers, parents and staff to get to know each other in a very nice social setting. Overall, I enjoy seeing and talking to staff and parents. The food, drink and music are always wonderful, as are the beautiful decorations (hard to believe we are at school). The live auction is so much fun too.

What’s in a Name?

We call Ireland the Emerald Isle? Why? It certainly isn’t a reference to emerald mines. Ever seen an aerial photo of Ireland? Then you know the reference to “emerald” is obvious. Ireland is famous for rolling green hills and is said to offer 40 shades of green, which sometimes seems like an understatement. Of course, there’s a wee bit more to the story. When the phrase “the Emerald Isle” was first uttered is unknown, but we do know it first appeared in print in 1795. Poet and political activist William Drennan gets the credit for coining the phrase in his poem When Erin First Rose. A lament of sorts over Ireland’s struggle for freedom and independence, the poem paints an image of the country as an emerald, a sparkling jewel. The phrase stuck and became enduringly popular. Although there are other locations that share the nickname, if you tell people you are going to visit the Emerald Isle, they’d be surprised if you meant anywhere other than Ireland.
