Despite today's weather, holiday card and gift season will be upon us soon! Freed Photography will be taking family and sibling portraits on Sept. 27 from 4:30-6:30, when that gorgeous fall light is at its best. The sitting fee will help support the Lafayette HSA.

Fifth Grader Selected as State Finalist in Essay Contest
|
|
|
Fifth grader Ben Smith was selected as a D.C. finalist in the Library of Congress' "A Book That Shaped Me" essay contest, a program that asks rising fifth- and sixth-graders to reflect on a book that has made a personal impact in their lives. Ben was honored at The National Book Festival on September 1st. His essay was also featured by the Little Lobbyists because of its focus on promoting acceptance and understanding of children with disabilities like his big sister Claire.

Lafayette Parent Presents New Children’s Book at Politics & Prose
Please join parent Katherine Marsh on Thursday September 13th at 7 p.m. at Politics & Prose as she discusses her new children’s novel Nowhere Boy, a timely, poignant tale of family, sacrifice and the friendship between a young Syrian refugee and an American boy living in Brussels. The book, aimed at readers 10 and above, has been featured on NPR’s Morning Edition, in People magazine, is an Amazon best book of the month and just earned its third starred review from School Library Journal.

Children are not just welcome—they are special guests! She will be signing books as well, which make great birthday and holiday gifts.

Chevy Chase Day
The Chevy Chase Citizens Association and the DC Department of Recreation are sponsoring Chevy Chase Day from 1-4 PM on Sept.15 at the Chevy Chase Community Center. Always a great favorite is the moon bounce and kids will love the petting zoo. Come out and enjoy free ice cream, cupcakes, popcorn, cotton candy, hot dogs and other treats sponsored by local businesses. The library will host a book fair and an expired medicine disposal program managed by the DC government. Bring unneeded and expired meds for drop off and safe disposal.

New: The Chevy Chase Citizens Association Chili Cook-Off. To participate as a contestant, please bring about 3 quarts of your prepared favorite chili in a crock pot, slow cooker or hot plate to the CCCC. Sampling and judging will be done by the public as well as surprise judges from the local community. The contest rules will be posted on the CC Listerv in a few days and on the Chevy Chase Citizens Association website. All entrants participate free of charge but we encourage non-members to become CCCA members for $15.

CCBC Yard Sale
Yard Sale is on September 22nd from 7 AM-7 PM. There will also be a cake walk at 12 PM. Address is 5671 Western Avenue, N.W., Washington DC, 20015. All donations are appreciated: Furniture, household goods, tools, toys and other lightly used items. Drop-off for donations starts Sept. 4th, 9 AM - 3 PM.
Funds raised will support our Philippines Missions Trip.

Peace Teacher, Ms. Ryden's book is being published!
Please come to Politics and Prose on Wednesday September 12 at 7pm for a book launch event for Ms. Ryden's book, Henry is Kind! Ms. Ryden will be talking about the Lafayette kids who inspired her book, which is now being published by Tilbury House Publishers and has new illustrations by Shearry Malone. If you have a copy of the self-published, Henry is Kind, it is now a collector's item. Come and hear about the new version! Ms. Ryden will be signing books afterward.
