A Message from the HSA Co-Presidents

Dear Lafayette Families,

In light of a series of racially insensitive events this school year, the HSA wants to reiterate our joint commitment to create an environment that is safe, supportive, and welcoming to all of our students, parents, and caregivers. For us, this means hatefulness has no place in our community.

In previous bulletins and in-person general meetings, Dr. B has shared the school’s work focused on racial equity, diversity, and inclusion training for staff and teachers. The HSA supports the school’s efforts and has launched a focused effort in this area as well, dedicated to parents and families. This work began in November with the establishment of our Diversity and Inclusion Subcommittee, led by Danielle Carter and Christina Daulton, co-chairs of the HSA’s Outreach Committee. Danielle and Christina began by reaching out to parents who previously expressed an interest in engaging around these topics, and one meeting was held in December. An update was provided at our general meeting on December 9th and minutes can be found here. Key goals of this parent-led committee are to foster a community that promotes inclusiveness, raises awareness about and addresses racial equity outside of the classroom, and supports parents in engaging in discussions with their children around race and the importance of diversity.

The Diversity and Inclusion Subcommittee is planning to host a series of programs for parents starting in early 2020. These programs will feature external speakers who will share perspectives around racial equity, diversity, and inclusion and provide spaces for facilitated dialogue. The subcommittee is also working to plan inclusive events (with free childcare) for parents and families to gather and socialize. Additional information about the programs and gatherings will be shared as they are finalized.

In the meantime, we would like to invite anyone who is interested to join the Diversity and Inclusion Subcommittee. Please contact Danielle and Christina at outreach@lafayettehsa.org if you are interested in joining or have any suggestions for the subcommittee. We also continue to welcome feedback and thank the families who have already reached out with ideas. Finally, thank you to Danielle and Christina for leading this important work.

We are committed to ensuring the HSA serves all Lafayette families. As a reminder, all HSA board meetings and general meetings are open to the community, and the schedule is posted on the school calendar. We hope to see you at our next general meeting on January 13th at 6:30 pm, followed by the Camp Fair.

Anu Mullick and Brianne Cohen (HSA Co-Presidents)
