The goals of the Music program are to develop a love of music, to build an understanding of musical techniques, and to foster musical creativity in every student.

Led by a certified Music teacher, students develop an appreciation of music in other cultures and experience the joy of musical creation and performance.  Exposure to a wide variety of musical styles and instruments helps children explore their own musical talents.  All grades sing, move, and play drums, percussion instruments, and keyboard instruments. Students in grades 1 through 4 play Orff instruments. In the 3rd and 4th grades, all students learn to read music and play the recorder. Students in grades 4 and 5 learn the guitar and have the opportunity to join the band or the percussion ensemble.

Performances are an important part of the music experience. All students participate in class and grade level performances for other students, parents, and sometimes for the entire school community during Lafayette’s annual Arts Night. Most performances tie into a current academic theme for that grade and also integrate closely with Art to create stage decorations and props. Regular performances help children gain confidence and become comfortable in front of an audience at an early age.
