Lafayette Gives Back

Happy new school year, Lafayette Families! We are the co-chairs of Lafayette’s community service program, Lafayette Gives Back, and are excited to announce some socially distant ways for your families to participate in giving back during the first term of the 2020-2021 school year. Many of these activities will benefit our sister school, Takoma Education Campus (TEC).
SEPTEMBER – We are having two drives this month:

  • Children’s Books – Our summer book drive for TEC was a great success! Each student who came to the school to pick up a device for virtual learning was invited to take one or more books. Our TEC contact reported back about the excitement in kids’ eyes when they get to pick out their own books. The school has now distributed nearly all of the 2,000 books we donated and asked for more!  You can drop books for children in grades pre-K-3 through 8th grade starting today at 5931 31st Place.
  • Baby Items – We are currently collecting games, children’s puzzles, and baby/ toddler clothing from size newborn up to 5T to help restock the inventory at A Wider Circle. Please drop baby items and children’s games & puzzles in new or gently used condition at 3112 Dogwood Street

**PLEASE only drop the requested items (no adult books or clothing bigger than 5T) and please only donate games and puzzles in like-new condition with all pieces intact.

Stay tuned for news later this Fall about our October coat drive and our holiday gift drive and thank you in advance for your generosity!
We are also looking for volunteers to help with these activities, specifically one or more:
  • Book Captains to lead a team of parent volunteers in sorting and delivering books to TEC over the next month
  • Coat Captains to lead a team of parent volunteers to collect, wash, and deliver coats to TEC in October.
Thanks to Jennifer Hwu and Debbie Gordon who have already generously offered their time and porches to these efforts! Please email or any of us with any questions.
