A Note From Dr. B

Dear Lafayette Families –

Fall has finally arrived! With fall, comes many exciting events. Thank you to our GROW committee last week for hosting Walk/Bike to school day. What an amazing and healthy way to start our morning. This Saturday we are all looking forward to our Fall Festival! The Fall Festival committee has been hard at work organizing an incredible community event, including food trucks, rides, vendors, and more! Be sure you are in the know with your ride bracelets, TwentyTables App, and all other items.

Last week, our LSAT team met for our monthly meeting. As a committee, we continued to discuss our planning for next year. This included a discussion on how to continue to best meet the needs of our students and families, despite our burgeoning size. We had a robust discussion on creating both a long term and a short term plan to accommodate our needs as a school community. As a committee, we decided that we will be reducing one section of PreK for the 2019-2020 school year (4 sections, rather than 5 sections). I’ve also been in discussions with DCPS to talk about the possibility of trailers, as well as other building considerations. For notes of the full discussion, please see the link here.

Aside from the LSAT (made up of elected parents and staff members), another parent committee we rely on heavily is the ASAT – After School Advisory Team. The ASAT aims to connect Lafayette’s parents, school administration, and aftercare and enrichment providers with each other to address students’ after-school needs and experiences. The team meets monthly during the school year to focus on issues related to planning, program offerings, and feedback from the parent community. The current on-site providers may also use the ASAT as a “working group” for problem-solving situations. Click here to read the ASAT bylaws. Our first ASAT meeting for this school year will be Thursday, 11/1 at 6:30 pm in the Library. Please join us if you would like to contribute to how our students experience after school, both aftercare and enrichment.

Please also join on Friday, 11/2 for our first ever Family Movie Night. We will be celebrating the end of Hispanic Heritage month by watching “Coco”. This fantastic movie dives deeply into the culture and traditions surrounding El Dia de los Muertos. Please join us from 6 pm – 8 pm. There will be pizza, cookies, popcorn, and drinks for sale. There will also be face painting! The movie starts promptly at 6:15 pm. We hope to see you there!

Take good care of each other this week. Hope to see you Saturday at the Fall Festival.
