Student Supervision Incident

January 31, 2024

Dear Lafayette Elementary School Families,

At Lafayette, we are committed to ensuring a safe environment for all students. Communicating home about incidents that take place during the school day is a large part of our partnership with families.

Monday morning, not long after arrival at 9:11 a.m., one of our students left the building through an exterior door. Upon notification that the student was outside, staff immediately went and brought the student back into the building by 9:22 a.m.

While the student was not harmed during the time they were outside of the building, we take supervision very seriously. This incident has been reported in accordance with DC Public Schools (DCPS) Incident and Emergency Response protocols and is currently under investigation. We are reviewing what happened to ensure the appropriate personnel response as we evaluate our student monitoring procedures to prevent reoccurrence.

This incident is concerning, and I sincerely regret that it occurred. I have been in touch with our student’s family, and we will offer support from our wellness team as needed.

Student safety is paramount. If you have any questions, please call the school office at (202) 282-0116 or email me at Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

 Dr. B

Principal, Lafayette Elementary School
