Water Main Break – 5/8/24

May 8, 2024

Dear Lafayette Elementary School Parents and Families,

At Lafayette, we are committed to the health and well-being of our students. Communicating home about facilities issues that arise during the day is critical to maintaining strong partnerships with families.

I am writing to share that around 10:40 a.m. today, our building experienced a short-term water outage due to a DC Water main break impacting our neighborhood. I want to assure families that there was no disruption to instruction, as students continued to learn and play with their peers. Lunch options were also prepared prior to the issue, and there was no interruption to our lunch service.

Additionally, students were able to use the restrooms as needed, though flushing toilets was limited. We also provided students and staff with ample hand sanitizer in classrooms and restrooms. In addition, school administration had 30 cases of bottled water available at our building for drinking water.

The DC Facilities and Operations Teams continued to monitor the situation, and by 12:30 p.m., the water was restored to our building. However, DC Water has since issued a Precautionary Boil Water Advisory, which includes Lafayette. All drinking water sources at our building have been removed from service, and bottled water will be delivered to our building. Our cafeteria and food and nutrition staff will also follow all advisory procedures found at dcwater.com/advisory.

During utility interruptions, it is essential to maintain student safety throughout the issue and repair while limiting disturbance to instruction or school day operations. If you have any questions, please call the school office at (202) 282-0116 or email me at

Sincerely,

Dr. Carrie Broquard

Principal, Lafayette Elementary School
